Yes, it would be in the old source.

Build the new vpopmail with --enable-auth-module=mysql, then edit ~vpopmail/etc/vpopmail.mysql to use the correct username, password and database name. You might be able to strace an old binary (like vuserinfo) to find out what username and password it's using to access the database.
