For very simple graphs HTML-table tricks might work, but requirements tend to become more complicated. Once you've invested the time in understanding the basics of JFreeChart or another library, it becomes relative easy to implement more complicated requests. If you've gone the easy way with HTML-Tables (if that is so easy after all), you might have to tell your users when they request more complicated stuff "sorry, can't do that".
