Just a fyi... I don't know if you have looked at other db options.
Postgres is a viable alternative to MySQL.
It handles datatypes of ANSI/IO standard SQL92 and has contributed to SQL99.
It has a PgAdmin GUI interface and robust code to build in PHP and other features for Wintel and Unices.
