Machete, cavaquinho, tiple, timple...and others and the later ukulele. I
think they are all just little guitars with four or five single strings
but different tunings, sometimes re-entrant. Perhaps the four-course
guitar is a sort of ancestor of them all. The machete is (or was) tuned
dgbd (- the same intervals as the top four course of an English guitar).
I got my cavaquinho from ebay, for less than £30.
