What do you mean with recognizing a word? What commands do you use? What version of Vim (console/GUI/...)? Did you compile yourself or use one of the distributed binaries? What is the ":version" output? What is 'iskeyword' set to and where was it set? What if you use "vim -u NONE"? Very likely this is a problem in your setup, not in Vim.
