Saving over FTP with vim 7

I'm having an issue saving a file open for edit using
the ftp://host mechanism. The steps are:

open gvim.exe from the Windows command line
open a file with ":e ftp://hostname/path/file";
proviide the username/password successfully
after loading the file and saving write with ":w"

After that I get an error message:
  ***netrw*** VIC104.tmp: File not found

The file name changes each time and I cannot find it
in any directory. Bug? Error in configuration? I can
put up my configurations if needed but nothing really
odd is set. Thanks!
