Well, I have 1gig drive in a Color Classic with Sys 7.1 that gives no
 problems, so if there is an upper limit, 500mb is well below that limit.

Have you tried something like "Mt. Everything" to see if the
drive appears on the SCSI bus? With the drive installed, does the
machine boot from a floppy? If so, put Mt. Everything on the boot
floppy and see what happens.
