Facetiously, I was wondering how a naive engineer might evaluate the Gulf
oil catastrophe:

Back of the envelope calculations:

Gulf volume is 6.43 x 10^17 gallons
Oil spill volume is 70 x 10^6 gallons so far

This comes out to 1 drop of oil per 1,000 gallons of water (much more that I
thought it would be, actually). A simple analysis would show that is a
trivial amount not worth bothering about :-) .
