That's incorrect. If you simply reply to a message, your reply will remain in the original thread, even if you change the Subject: line. This is because (well behaved) mail readers use other fields in the header of a mail message to determine the thread the message belongs.

Now, if your mail *composer* has an option or feature like "Put message in a new thread when changing the Subject of a reply", that's a different thing, and that can be what Jones is saying.
