Dave, Do you have the author or publisher of the textbook?
Science teachers review science books for the classroom. This reflects a widespread deference to "authority", without questioning the assumptions or thinking for oneself.
It's too much work to edit your syllabus, not to mention change a set of exercises, so don't expect to buck the mythology of what one is required to know a true. Politicians now decide that.
