MAYOR OF BETHLEHEM TO VISIT BURLINGTON
AND TO PARTICIPATE IN PUBLIC FORUM

Mayor Victor Batarseh of the City of Bethlehem, one of Burlington’s sister
cities, will visit Burlington October 17-18. Dr. Batarseh will discuss
conditions in Bethlehem at an informal public gathering on Monday, October
17, at 7:30 p.m. in the Lorraine B. Good Room, second floor of the
Firehouse Center for the Visual Arts, 135 Church Street in Burlington.

During his stay, Mayor Batarseh and his wife Marcelle will meet with
Burlington Mayor Peter Clavelle, Sister City Committee President Mousa
Ishaq, and other members of the Burlington-Bethlehem-Arad Sister City
Committee, as well as representatives of local nonprofit organizations
working in the West Bank and Gaza.

On the afternoon of Tuesday, October 18, Mayor Batarseh will visit “Made in
Palestine,” an exhibition of art by Palestinian artists at the T.W. Wood
Gallery at Vermont College in Montpelier. The exhibit opens Tuesday at
noon. The show will run through November 20, Tuesdays-Sundays, 12:00-4:00 p.m.

Dr. Victor Batarseh—an ear, nose and throat surgeon—was elected Mayor of
Bethlehem on May 20, 2005. Mayor Batarseh has held dual U.S. citizenship
for 18 years, once living in Sacramento, California.

Burlington first developed sister city relationships with the Palestinian
city of Bethlehem and the Israeli city of Arad in 1991. In 1996,
representatives of the three cities signed cooperative agreements-the
first-ever sister-city pacts among American, Palestinian, and Israeli
communities. Over the years, the Burlington-Bethlehem-Arad Sister City
Program has sponsored numerous dialogues, exchanges, and projects aimed at
developing mutual understanding, building people-to-people relationships,
and providing humanitarian assistance.
