I too am very appreciative of the commendable support from site resources from
Megan Morrison's initial help with web design, her prompt updates, continued
guidance and positive attitude.

You're the wind beneath my wings. Thanks so much for all you do for AAUW.

I second Carol’s sentiments. I’ve never asked for help without receiving
it promptly and with great clarity.

In the early 1980s, AAUW determined that the “computerization of
basic functions” was an Association priority. Thanks to a generous $1 million
dollar gift in 1984 from AAUW St. Louis (MO) Branch member Leona J. Beckmann,
AAUW’s first in-house computer system and server room were established.

Since then, AAUW and its members have committed to technology in
support of our mission.

1989 — AAUW implements AAUWide by CompuServe, the Association’s
computerized communications system to link members together.

1994 — The first totally online branch, the Northern Virginia
Online Branch, is formed and incorporated with 15 members.

1995 — AAUW debuts its first website containing 26 pages.

1995–1996 — AAUW of Washington State bought computers for its
state officers, which are passed along to the successor at the end of each
officer’s term.

1999 — The AAUW St. Lawrence County (NY) Branch created the first
branch website.

2000 — AAUW’s research report, Tech Savvy: Educating Girls in
the New Computer Age, explores how to make the defining technology of the
century more accessible, appealing, and inviting to a variety of users and
learners.

2007 — The AAUW California Online Branch creates the first branch
Facebook group. AAUW of North Carolina becomes the first state on Facebook
later that year.

2007 — The Technology Usability Adviser Group (TUAG) collaborates
with staff to develop and test the Member Services Database (MSD) which
provides members secure, online access to AAUW’s national membership records
database.

2008 — The national blog, then called AAUWDialog, debuts and now
averages more than 5,500 unique visitors a week. In December 2013, the blog had
its best week ever (so far) with nearly 20,000 unique visitors in just one week.

2010 — The AAUW Social Media Committee is formed to help identify
social and new media opportunities and assist branches and states and the
national office in strategically utilizing these emerging technologies.
Today, more than 775 branches and 48 states maintain websites, 200
branches and states (and growing) are on Facebook, and 50 branches and states
have Twitter accounts. Leona's gift helped kick start AAUW into the new
computer age. Your continued contributions and leadership help AAUW to explore
new technologies, to reach out to new audiences, and to support the mission in
new ways.

During this AAUW Member and Volunteer Appreciation Week, we thank
you website managers, social media wranglers, Site Resources coordinators, and
new media evangelists for all that you do on behalf of AAUW.

And we know there are other major technology milestones that we
missed. So please, share them with us. We’d love to hear from you!
