What exactly do you compare?  If you compare Windows version of Wget
to native Windows tools, I guess it's understandable that the latter
are faster, since they've been designed for Windows from the start.

The 3.5 MB/s was not supposed to be indicative of download speed; I
only gave it to lend you perspective about my CPU usage.

But to answer the question, the machine that served the files was
pretty crappy.  But I've now conducted a somewhat better test; I've
created a sparse file (`mkfile -n 1g foo' on Solaris) on a lightly
loaded server and downloaded that using HTTP.

Result: speed of 7 to 7.5 MB/s.

To compare, lftp seems to download it at 7 MB/s top.
