[Winona Online Democracy]

I enjoyed the article. But then I agreed with it. I
am afraid for our country when I think of how many
good people would read 'anti-American' into Gunyou's
article.
This reminds me of conversations I was involved with
recently regarding the value of local elected
officials and how much more approachable and
responsive they are. That, in my mind, is what true
democracy in this country was based on. A good
example locally is the broad spectrum of support for
the Learning Levy. We have staunch Conservatives at
the lead of this levy effort working hand in hand with
those labeled Liberal. People working together for
what is best for our community's future. They are not
blindly hiding behind rhetoric to feather their own
nests at the expense of our future. Why can't our
State and National elected officials do this. I don't
know how to fix that but I do know that the local
positions up for election and the local levy issue are
just as important at the hotly debated national
issues. We should be sure to get out and vote and
encourage others to vote even if all we vote on are
those local positions. It is at the local level that
we can make a difference even in spite of those at the
higher levels of government.
