These articles are great!  I just wish our Governor and Legislature would study them.
Using Property Taxes to fund statewide entitlements rather than just focusing on property related services creates huge inequities.  Schools are the best example.
Minnesota is a good example of how business looks at much more than taxes to decide about location - they want to know how the taxes are spent and how that helps them and their workforce.
The last article on changing the tax system makes suggestions that really do need to be considered.  What I like most is it tackles the argument about high taxes being a disincentive for business to expand, hire, etc.  It would say - "let's tax more on that seven figure CEO income and not tax the business."  And, I believe the idea of a tax incentive to pay a 'living wage' is long overdue.

Hello Winona Online Democracy,

(And a few others who I thought might be interested in this subject),

In today's edition of the Star Tribune, Sunday, December 12, 2004, there
were a couple great articles on the Opinion Page about taxes, economic
growth, jobs, and wages in Minnesota.

I've copied three articles below. (I apologize for the length of this e-mail.)

I'm curious to see what others think of the articles. For example...

1. Article # 1: How can the media do a better job of filtering through
all the spin and misinformation when it comes to taxes and politicians? It
seems like most media are simply "echo chambers" and parrots.

2. Article # 2: Why is the fact that Minnesota's quality of life, highest
regional average wages, best economic growth, high test scores, most
healthy st ate status, fasting growing population, and other important
factors not brought up when we talk about cutting taxes? Especially when
politicians and business leaders talk about taxes?

3. Article # 3: What do people think about eliminating the corporate
income tax and most sales taxes paid by business and offsetting it by
increasing the income tax rate on people making over $400,000 a year? (I'd
like to talk much more about our backwards tax system.)

What do you think?
