The Center for West European Studies and the European Union Center of
Excellence at the
Henry M. Jackson School of International Studies are pleased to present:

Europe Caught Between Austerity & Growth:
Which Way Out of the Crisis?
2012 Teacher Workshop for Middle School, High School, and Community College
Educators
Wednesday, August 22, 2012
9:30am - 4:00pm
317 Thomson Hall
Fueled by a crisis in confidence that southern Europe and Ireland cannot
manage their growing debt, the financial crisis in Europe continues to be a
global concern. Austerity and growth are the two economic policies most
frequently forwarded to Europe¹s ongoing problems. In August, the Center for
West European Studies and the European Union Center of Excellence partner on
an educator workshop designed to introduce teachers to ongoing debates on
the best way forward for Europe. Teachers will learn about where the crisis
came from, how it is impacting Europeans and what possible solutions exist
to balance austerity and growth. The summer teacher workshop seeks to
demonstrate ways in which educators can then frame these debates for
students in their classrooms.
The workshop includes 6 clock hours, parking, teaching materials and lunch
at the University of Washington Faculty club. Participants must attend for
the full six hours to receive clock hours. Preference is given to full-time
teachers.
Registrations are due no later than August 15, 2012.
A limited number of travel grants are available to eligible teachers to help
defray transportation and/or lodging costs for those who attend from outside
the Seattle Metro area. Please check the box below for more information
about the availability of these travel grants. These opportunities are made
possible by generous grants from the US Department of Education and the
Delegation of the European Union to the USA.
