I tend to use 'code', because a) this indeed makes more immediate sense for the client, and b) in a less technical definition, markup *can* be considered code, in that markup tags are the codes that the relevant parser requires to render the expected output. In fact, my other commonly used option is just to say 'HTML' - just about everybody understands roughly what that is, conceptually at least.
