Apologies for being so late on this (been rather busy at work). The double-space after a full-stop (period) thing is simply a notational convention that sprang out of the typing pools of the 1950s. It has nothing to do at all with grammar, and is in fact actively discouraged as practise in the modern age. Many old school secretaries who may have come through 'secretarial school' swear by it, but it's a very out-of-date practise confined to old school corporate documents. Anyone insisting on it now as 'grammatically correct' simply doesn't know what they're talking about.
