AFAIR the only way for you to learn it is to look into

source code how something is done, and then ask on
developer list. 

If you have completely new development, and not depend
on XD 1.x you may go for XD-2 plugin which is far
easier to write. 

You can use velocity or jelly ( which is said to be
inspired by .xdt :) )  - they are easier to use.
And tag architecture is also far better. 

And you can employ unit tests....
