http://git.xfce.org/apps/ristretto/tree/src/thumbnailer.c Line 149-151 Rename org.freedesktop.thumbnails.Thumbnailer1 to something that does not make sense, like org.freedesktop.thumbnails.DoesNotWork Then ristretto can't reach tumbler, and it will give you the error. Ristretto contacts tumbler to generate thumbnails.
