Following the advice of an install guide, I made a clean install of Debian
(woody) without running tasksel or dselect. The install guide then assumes
you're going to download Xfree86 and KDE from the internet using apt-get.
This workstation, however, is not connected to the internet.

I downloaded the Xfree86 files from the FTP server and copied them to the
harddrive. Following the advice of the Xfree86 install FAQ, I ran "sh
Xinstall.sh" and let the system install. Everything seemed to execute
normally.

However, none of the further setup has been done, and I can't get the server
to run successfully. I used xf86configure to set up the X86Config file.
However, although there is a mouse cursor, the mouse doesn't move. The
keyboard is also dead once X starts up, although it works fine at the
command prompt, obviously.

I can't find a guide for a clean install, such as this -- only for upgrade.
Obviously, some additional configuration must be done. Does anyone have any
experience with this?

Thanks!
