Hey there...

As requested in

http://www.xfree86.org.ru/3.3.6/cirrus7.html

I'm reporting "failure" out-of-the-box with the following:
Canon Innova Book 490CDT
Cirrus Logic GD754x (see below)
XFree86 4.3.0 (binaries, not source)
RedHat 6.2
Linux 2.2.14-5.0

But I'm emailing you direct for a reason:

I *thought* I had this thing working before...

Then I got a new laptop, and got that one working, and then I ripped X off of this one so I could install something else, then the newer laptop got stolen, and now I'm stuck trying to reconstruct what I did...

I thought I took notes and even posted them, but can't find them on-line.

Here are the things I recall from lo these many years ago:

1. Auto-detecting claims it's a GD7548, but I think I installed Win long enough to find out it was *really* a GD7546 (?) or some other chip, and then forced the chipset using some "Option" I have now forgotten.

2. This chip can do dynamic clock or fixed clock. Only by forcing the clock to be fixed was I able to get it to work. No idea what the magic number was, and can't find it on-line again.

3. There was only one (1) on-line site that had a calculator which would let you plug in dot clock and get the timings as output, instead of the other way around. Futzing with the timings to try to reverse-engineer a specific dot-clock number was hopeless.

4. The auto-detection of video RAM was always double what was actually there, and that also had to get set by some Option.

5. I think I had to use "noaccel", but maybe I was able to change that back once I resolved everything else.

6. I also found it impossible to deduce anything useful with the default umpteen ModeLines, 99% of which are useless anyway. If the log file would match up rejected/accepted ModeLines with line numbers that would have helped. But I was at one point reduced to eliminating one mode line at a time and re-booting just to figure out which ModeLines were hopeless, and which one was sorta kinda working, but not quite right. If anybody can add that featurelet so we know which modeline in the log file matches which line in the config file, life would be easier for many.

It's possible I'm confusing this laptop with some other laptop battle I had, but I don't think so...

The "best" behaviour I can get so far is:
X starts up, and the top 2/3 of the screen has streaky colored vertical lines, and the bottom inch (menubar?) has random colored dots
Then, the screen goes gray with the X (mouse) in the center.
Finally, in the top right corner, a gray outline box appears, about 1 x 1.5 inches, looking not unlike it should be a photo thumbnail, only it's empty.
Alas, the thing is then hung, and ctl-alt-backspace, +/- and DEL are useless. Hard-cold power-cycle, complete with hard-disk re-check is required.

The X log file is in /var/log/ rather than, errr, wherever the documentation told me it would be, but that's probably X figuring out I'm using RedHat and doing the "right" thing.

Whew. If, out of all that, you can tell me anything useful or point me in the right direction, I'd sure appreciate it. Canon sold off the laptop line, and after five (5) phone calls, I have yet to reach anybody claiming they actually support this box.

I guess the most crucial missing info is the actual magic fixed dot-clock number for the CL GD7546 and/or CL GD7548 which I've managed to lose.

Here is the log file:
