Sounds like a plausible explanation. Alan, you might want to take a look
at /etc/inittab, and look at a line like this:
id:5:initdefault:
You'll want the default to be 5 (like it is in the line above) i.s.o. 3.

Thanks both Pieter and Jay, but odd, sadly it is just like that. Maybe a reboot is in order?
