greetings.

i recently acquired a 23-inch sony sdm-p323w lcd display. it was the
store display (which is how i could afford it) and came with no
documentation, nor does any seem to be available online. this panel has
1920x1200 resolution. it also has two digital (DVI-D) and two analog
inputs, switchable in firmware and via a front panel switch. its timing
is, according to published specs, 28-92kHz horizontal and 48-85Hz
vertical.

when booting linux in pure text mode, i get text whether on the analog
or digital "side," with the digital much sharper. of course, i'd like
to use the digital side for xfree as well, but this has thusfar been
elusive. i'm running suse 9.1 with current security patches. i have
installed the ati-provided driver, which has actually broken stuff: i
was getting [EMAIL PROTECTED] analog, with direct rendering. by switching
back to the xfree-provided radeon driver i can still get this
resolution and refresh rate, but the ati installation appears to have
well and truly broken dri. the xfree shipped with suse 9.1 identifies
itself as 4.3.99. the kernel is 2.6.5. i should mention that the
monitor did not come with a DVI cable; i am using a monster cable
designed for television use, but do not know if this matters.

in various experiments using the radeon driver and the ati-supplied
fglrx driver, i have on occasion gotten a very noisy digital display at
apparently random resolutions such as 1778x1200 and 1858x1200, which
quickly blink off. when using the radeon driver, no errors are reported
in the xfree log except for dri failing to load. but the digital side
is blank.

i've read the radeon manpage, which has been of help, but there is no
DVI-D-specific documentation i can find for setting this up. sax2 is of
no assistance here, alas, in keeping with its long tradition.

is there any experience here in configuring a big lcd for DVI-D input?
are there any particular tests i could or should perform that might
provide useful information? my sense is that the heads need to be
configured separately and there should be two monitor configurations,
one for analog and one for digital, but i'm lost in figuring out both
their syntax and their contents.

thanks in advance for information, advice, or educated guesses.
