after applied patch,
i run 'make' in build dir,
then 'make install'.(keep previous build, i think this is enough,
isn't it? or should i run 'make World' again?)

It should have been sufficient to `make install` under xc/programs/Xserver/hw/xfree86/drivers/i740.

rebuild with gcc-3.3 ok.
could be problem of gcc-4.

Is this true without the patch?
