[xmail] SMTP Failing on Gentoo Server

First, my apologies in advance if I have sent this twice.

Hello, all.  I have an unusual problem on a new server I’m building.  For
this server I’m using gentoo linux, and just emerged the xmail package—very
easy install.  Now, though, I’m having some strange problems.  

POP seems to work, all the time.  SMTP works to domains where I have an SMTP
gateway defined in smtpgw.tab.  But messages sent to domains outside my
network (with no gateway defined) are accepted, but never get there.

My suspicion is that this is somehow related to the fact that the xmail
package installs itself in a chroot environment, and I’m not familiar with
that type of thing.

I’d appreciate any thoughts or suggestions.
