Kevin, Thank you very much for the workaround. It does the trick:
1) Use CTRL-ALT-F1 to go to alternative console mode, 2) Close the lid and open it up again, 3) Use CTRL-ATL-F7 to return to the X window. Now the question is why we don't have this problem running Windows XP. Is the problem with the Radeon M7 driver under XFree86? Or the problem is with BIOS? If it's the later, I might bug Dell for a fix. Have a wonderful day. Bruce
Sigh! This really needs to be a FAQ. IF only there was a fix. But there is a (messy) workaround. But it's lots better than a reboot. ...
