Hi, in the past people asked for several extensions to the current WD. There are many interesting ideas among - you should look in the mailing list archive for details.
Several projects use the current Working Draft or Lexus which is a Java based implementation of this specification. I added a resource page which lists all known projects to the project homepage. I'm sure there are more projects which we don't know yet. So far so good ... But the current spec lacks of some really needful features (XSelect, <move> vs. <append> vs. <insert>) and last but not least the reference implementation still has some bugs. So my questions is: Is there anybody willing to actively support this project? This is an Open Source project and everybody can help to move the project on. There is no problem to gain cvs access rights to include the work you did!
