Hi, Does del.icio.us compete with digg/reddit? If so, in what sense?
Clearly, a hot news item that is known by hundreds of people can become a hot news item on del.icio.us. But what if the news item is only known by a handful of people or even just one person? In that case, would digg/reddit be better suited for spreading that news item? In my view, del.icio.us is quite different from digg/reddit. In particular, there is a much greater fraction of users who contribute content to del.icio.us than digg/reddit. Del.icio.us users contribute content to benefit themselves, rather than to promote/discuss news items. Most digg/reddit users just want to see hot news, mostly submitted by a few people. So the motivations are very different, and it's not immediately clear how one might transform a social bookmarking service like del.icio.us into a service that can be used for both social bookmarking and social news. Indeed, the combination may be too complicated and confusing for most users. Amir Yahoo!
