Thanks Al, I think you're catching on...there hides a bit of dilletante
somewhere...
and Mike probably was totally ignorant of the history of Haiku and
Tanka... that
in Imperial Court Japan, a noble might seek the affection or liason with a
highly
placed lady, and offer her via some lower ranking messenger, the wrapped
Haiku
as the subtle, often very cloaked suggestive message...

Her reply was the Tanka couplet...and it could be some sentimental and
positive
"agreement" to the suggested get together, or it could be a rather wise and
even cutting rebuke whereby both the Lady and the Nobleman could
essentially
maintain their dignity, expecially if the exchanged poetry ever got
intercepted by
family members or other jealous parties. As the form evolved for the sake
of court
expression and demonstration it became a much more abstract, purely poetic
form,
but always kept elements of the surprise twist, inversion of expectation
or logic,
the purely Japanese style of "ah-hah!" pronounced "Atari!" btw...
in any event, there have never been formal absolute rules to Haiku or
Tanka,
aside from the traditional 5,7,5, and 7,7 meter...and even this has been
cleverly and
knowingly altered by very skilled masters in all centuries since the Meiji
Dynasty.

In any event...I am a published and award recognized poet of Haiku, not
that I suggest that any
of my 30 second responses here are of that depth or breadth...

But to me, all other "sentiment" aside, the critique seems ignoble and
misplaced, as
it casts a shadow on what was intended as a peaceful and harmonious
reconciliation...

Ah, that Yang that cannot help but follow that Ying!

I am away for a month or so...must get a new business up and running...
Hopefully will catch breath and time and check in again by Spring...

Peace,

Zenbob
