Hi Nolan,

You have two main choices for monitoring windows hosts.

You can use SNMP, in which case we recommend using the free SNMP Informant agent:

http://www.snmp-informant.com/

The other option is to use WMI. WMI is separate from SNMP and provides much more function than SNMP.

You can monitor windows event logs and control services.

You also get quite a bit more information about installed software, service packs, etc.

I understand your confusion on ZenWin. ZenWin is the part of Zenoss that talks WMI. In the 1.1.x version of Zenoss, ZenWin was a separate piece of code that you had to install on a windows (XP) host to act as a WMI proxy.

One of the most significant innovations in the new 2.0 release is that ZenWin runs on the main Zenoss instance natively. So there is no need for a proxy anymore.

You simply configure a windows admin level userid / password in Zenoss and away you go.

I hope this helps.

Hello!

I am attempting to implement ZenOSS 2.0 on a distributed network. I am interested in monitoring Windows systems and Linux systems, and possibly
a few network devices.

I'm super confused when it comes to monitoring Windows systems. It
appears that WMI can be exposed via SNMP - so does ZenOSS 2.0 have the
built in capability for monitoring anything in WMI I want to monitor via
SNMP? Where does ZenWin fit into this? I don't see ZenWin on the
downloads page - is this because it is older, and not used with ZenOSS
2.0? If ZenWin is necessary, do I need to install it on all Windows
systems, or just a single Windows system?

Either way, a brief description of how the pieces fit together and how I
should implement monitoring of Windows and Linux systems would be
excellent. I can't seem to find anything that gives me any idea on how
ZenWin fits into the picture.

Thank you for your insight!

Nolan
