After being set ablaze over land dispute, Dalit farmer dies
Express News Service Posted: Sep 19, 2009 at 0329 hrs

Junagadh A Dalit farmer, who had been set ablaze about a month ago at
Mangalpur village of Keshod taluka in a rift over encroachment on
village revenue land, succumbed to his injuries on Thursday.
A group of eight people had poured kerosene on Ranabhai Rathod (48)
and set him ablaze on August 23, when the farmer and his wife were at
work in the disputed land. Rathod was first admitted in the Keshod
government hospital in a serious condition, but was later shifted to
the Jamnagar Civil Hospital. Since then, he had been under treatment
at Jamnagar until his death, said the police.

According to the Keshod police, deputy sarpanch Pola Khima, talati
Kishor Bachu and six others were named as accused. The police arrested
all the eight men, following a complaint lodged by the victim. An
offence was registered under Sections 307 (attempt to murder) and 114
(helping each other in committing crime) of the Indian Penal Code, and
under the provisions of Atrocity Act.

They were incarcerated in Junagadh jail when a Keshod court granted
them bail on Tuesday, said the police, adding that now, it is a case
of murder. “We have already submitted a report to the Keshod court
about this new development. Now, the court will decide the fate of the
accused,” said a police official, adding, “Once the accused get bail,
they can be arrested again only after the court issues an arrest
warrant against them.”

Meanwhile, following Rathod’s death, the situation in the village is
tense, and adequate police force has been deployed to prevent any
untoward incident, said sources.
