I know these are simple and probably already tried but a low pram battery has caused the problems you describe in my 61 without the date or clock being off time; try to get a used copy of conflict catcher and maybe get rid of OS 9 partition. The Mac I believe goes to the highest OS unless the start up disk is set, I believe this is also held by the pram. Possible that the computer is reading the external first then going to 8.6 and getting confused ?

Are there settings on the Sonnet, if so try adjusting those to see if lower settings produce better results.
These are good machines little machines, remeber like all computers they were the cutting edge and they had to have models. Try using 10 year old tech on a windows, keep at it. let us know if the problem persists.
Good luck,
Geoff

I have IE5.1.6, Communicator 4.79, Mozilla 1.0, and iCab 2.9.8. running on a freshly reformatted drive and a freshly copy of 8.6. This 6100 has a Sonnet 400MHz G3 and 256 Mb RAM installed. It has always run well on 8.1 or 7.6.1, but has been flaky since I have upgraded to OS 8.6.

I have 9.1 istalled on a partition of an external hard drive. When I first installed 9.1 it tried to "take over" the machine and somehow made it difficult to select the 8.1 system folder on the internal hard drive as the startup disk. Maybe some of the problems I'm having aren't some sort of legacy from the 9.1 installation?
