If it is 10 only, and is half-duplex only, then it is a hub.

If it is 10/100 (or 10/100/1000), and is full-duplex (and half-duplex, 
too), then it is a switch.

The LaserWriters, and most Macs, are 10 and half-duplex.

A switch is smart enough to allow simultaneous connections which are 
100/1000 and full-duplex, along with 10 and half-duplex, such as that 
between a pre-B&W Mac, and a LaserWriter.
