Plan B - look on the LEM swaplist for a SCSI cd drive.

Plan C - think about removing your external drive from its case and sticking it straight into the 6100.

Have you tried booting while holding down Delete-Option-Command-Shift
(D.O.C.S.)? That works with a number of non-Apple-ROM SCSI drives.
