To me the defining use of the 808 cowbell was all those SOS Band
"On the Rise" era cuts that Jimmy Jam and Terry Lewis produced
in the early 1980s.  It didn't really sound like a real cowbell (well,
the cowbells bands use don't sound like real cowbells either), but
it defined a whole genre of r&b/pop...
