While speaking of drum sounds. Does anyone know where did Todd Terry get

-Yes it's E-MU's SP-1200 sampling drummachine. Check for E-MU machines at:

It's an old HIP-HOP grande classique, when talking about drummachines.
Public Enemy used them extensively, and so did everyone who had little more
to spend on their drummachines: It was and still IS very expensive. You can
search for used SP-1200's and IF someone is willing to sell theirs, it's
gonna cost you. ($650-$1500...)
E-MU brought that machine back to market few years ago, and it still cost
fuck-loads of money. In England it was like 2000£!!! It's a 12-bits sampling
machine!!! For that money you could get an AKAI MPC-60 or MPC2000 which are
more than simple d-machines....
But I suppose there is something to love about them, since Todd Terry still
uses them (he had a couple if I remember correctly). That low resolution
sampling quality is one hit-factor in those old classic Todd Terry tracks
for sure, shitty drums and percussion sound so good when you know what
you're doing.
Those who have heard his Royal House LP know what I'm talking about: it
sounds like that whole album was processed thru some lo-fi filter! It sounds
so "ghetto", that it makes TRAX output sound like a million dollar business!
(And that's something ;))
