Cool topic! Actually I came across a few good journals when I researched
this techno and gender article. I am sure if you go to a music dep library
you would find a bunch of journals devoted to the psychology of music and I
believe I stumbled on a university Internet mailing list on this too, so you
may find some useful studies there. But I am probably just stating the
obvious, given the nature of your project. Maybe put together some questions
and survey people. The problem with academic theory these days is that it
has become so very abstracted and static and far removed from reality and
the flux of popular culture and the era of postmodern media, don't you
agree? I am familiar with the theory but you really have to talk to people
to get a wider picture and understand the complexities of it all.

Many people will refer to "taste" but that is itself shaped by any number of
factors.

Cheers
