you might want to tie in with the previous thread of women and techno... the
male brain is better configured for repetetive or minimal music as a hang
over from hunting (when it was necessary to concentrate on one thing and not
be distracted), the female brain, which processes sound in a different area,
is used to recieving additional input.
also, it may be worth looking at the effect of seratonin. The action of
ecstacy, stopping seratonin breakdown, has been shown to cause mice to
repeat movements (if you can find the original paper it's unintentionally
hilarious, particularly the mouse on speed, I think it was in the "Animal
Behaviour" journal). In addition, fluoxetine (Prozac) is used to alleviate
depression and can cause people to become far more outgoing, this acts on
seratonin production.
If you have access, a quick search on www.bids.ac.uk should bring up a good
many papers in the effect of seratonin.
introvert and extrovert people will have different seratonin levels, if the
link between this and repetition can be made, a good argument could be put
forward that this governed people's reactions to repetitive music.
