I hear a 'housier' shift in his [Jeff Mills] music myself, though it is
still minimal. Maybe we are moving into a new era of techno - the music is
'deeper' and more melodic again.
This can be heard all over the Tresor 8 Comp.
I wish Mills would do more club dates over 'raves'. The crowds are more
sophisticated.
I agree to a certain extent...kids running around with every piece of their
clothing either glowing or flashing and their eyes wider than the back end
of an elephant is very very old news. However, those old enough to drink and
do so until they fall down the stairs, or are just going out without knowing
who's playing are just as annoying. This happened with Claude Young here in
Mpls. (although it was an 18+ show, legal drinking age is 21), lots of
people dancing to the trance stuff. The light sticks were really flying
while one of the local DJs was warming up the decks for Young. It looked
like glowbugs stuck in a tumble dryer down at the laudrette. Then when
Claude took over, he stopped the silliness cold (yes, I do sometimes think
all that rave stuff is silly...not always mind you, just at this particular
moment I certainly did because I had a strong feeling it would stop when
Claude Young started). He started the beats up and the light sticks and,
sure enough, all the blinking head visors were GONE....the dance floor
literally became darker. It was Very interesting to see. In addition, the
floor opened up because lots of those people left. My conclusion? I don't
think they were clued in to who he is and the music he plays. On the same
note, this happens at the raves as well.
The turn-out was small (I think a lot of people are too tired to party
Friday nights - they want housier sounds instead of techno maybe)...
Funny, seems to be the same situation here. Halfway around the world.
Fridays seems to attract the 'handbag' crowd (nothing wrong with that) and
Saturday are for the die hards (techno or house or...) because they either
go out on Friday and Saturday (and possibly Sunday too), or they know that
every pent-up office worker is going to be out Friday getting pissed, and
not wanting to be challenged by the music (yes, I think for the most part
house is less challenging then techno to listen to, not all house, mind you,
just most that gets club play).

into it (I was not in the mood since everyone had forgotten my birthday and
I had expensive iMac computer repairs to worry about after a mega crash on
an important deadline!!).
