talking of Hancock and Clinton et al, i'm almost ashamed to admit
that i know more or less nothing about most all of the 70's funk
artists i often see mentioned as a major influence on techno, and more
specifically on Detroit techno... i was thinking about taking a random
punt on a coupla cds last Saturday, and nearly picked up "Headhunters"
anyway, but i figured it'd be a good idea to take advantage of the
collective knowledge of the list before i part with some hard earned.
'Headhunters' is a pretty good introduction to Herbie Hancock, and I'm
sure you'll recognize alot of the samples... some of the tracks have
nearly been sampled/played to death. Alot of the 70's funk-fusion (Herbie,
Return to Forever etc.) stuff is also popular with electric jazz-wank
'house' bands... a cheesey prime-time show here in Australia used the track
'Chameleon' as their intro song for years.
For more 'electronic' sounding Herbie stuff, check LP's like 'Sextant' (pick
the Jedi Knights samples) and 'Sunlight' (cue dozens of House cut-ups)...
and also keep an eye out for solo LP's by Headhunter band members, like
Bennie Maupin and Harvey Mason.
cheers
