I saw DJ Hell here in NYC at Limelight on Saturday and Guernica on Monday.
Both of those sets were AMAZING. I've heard all of the stories about how
good of a DJ he is, and a usual, I took it with a grain of salt. He
definitely won me over with the variety of his sets. He, obviously played a
lot of German records, granted, a lot of late 80's/early 90's stuff that
was really good. The way he dances while playing reminds me a lot of the
way Heather Hart bops around while playing. Definitely loves doing what he
does.
Crass generalizations of German techno is a bit harsh, especially when
there is crap everywhere, not just Germany.
Peace
Alex

You could take that one step further and ask about the differences between
East Germany and West Germany which is something that interests me (Ethnic
Slavic with family in Dresden). I hear that the (West) German clubbers
dress
up a lot.
The best German DJ I have seen and heard is DJ Hell - he is one of my
favourites, diverse, funky. I really like his label a lot. Most of the
German guys regularly come out to Australia - Thomas Schumacher is due
Easter.
It is not crap but I guess it has plateau-ed in recent times. I haven't
been
there though but I have seen many DJs. Patrick Lindsey is big in Australia
and he seems not so well known os.
