I thought "Whippets" was a track on one of the Holger Hiller records on which Billy sang. Mackenzie also did a collaboration with Paul Haig (there's another one!) released not all that long ago on Paul's label.

specially in the first releases of scritti politti
on their own st pancras label and up to 'the word "girl"' or 'the sweetest girl' then he kinda dissolved into his own stardom, apart from the pristine "absolue" track

btw, it's billy mackenzie that commited suicide, not alan rankine. anybody heard his last one "whippets" ?
for some reason I did not buy it when it was released
