It just means a dance party...or a party where dancing is the main focus. So UR doing a cabaret should not be surreal but great. It will give the out of towners and others a chance to see a different part of Detroit as well which is a good thing.
Cabaret, as I'm sure any 212 313er will tell you, is an evil word in NYC. The lack of a cabaret license was used by the Giulani administration to shut down bars if the patrons were found dancing in the establishment. These licenses were more difficult to acquire than liquor licenses. Crazy..
