Artists shouldn't be motivated by money, whether they are sampling other people's music or being sampled themselves. I think it is common courtesy to acknowledge your sources and the Beastie Boys clearly haven't been professional about this, but I don't think it should ever have got in the hands of shyster lawyers whose only motivation is money. If you're suing for money, unless you have genuinely lost earnings, then I think you have lost your integrity and the argument.
