The story (as far as I know) goes like this; Gen went to do a radio interview/gig in Chicago and was taken to a record shop where Derricks May & Carter worked. (The latter even went on tour with them as a rapper !!) Being partial to psychedelic music he asked them for the maddest records they had in the shop. They picked a selection of 'Acid House' out which he took back to the UK and played to death. These records influenced him into making the 'Jack the Tab' compilation which although very good, never really struck me as being either a.) an Acid-House record - there wasn't a 303 in sight or b.) a radical new sound - it contained loads of samples much akin to what Meat Beat Manifesto and others had been doing a few years earlier. Love him as much as I do I have to agree with the guy who said that anything he says should be taken 'with a pinch of salt'. In short the Porridge likes to exaggerate in interviews in order to attract publicity (he recently claimed that he was a re-incarnation of Aleister Crowley). Gen has been around many different musical styles/eras and can even stake claim to inventing a musical 'genre' with Throbbing Gristle (Industrial Music) but he definetly didn't coin the phrase 'Acid House'. I see a new thread starting with this one ;)
It would be interesting to hear Fred's version of events regarding the whole GPO>Acid House debate. BTW - Are any other 313'ers off to the Throbbing Gristle re-union concert in Sussex, UK next May. 3 days of madness with TG, Chris & Cosey (now called Carter Tutti), Coil, Scanner, Richard H Kirk, Pansonic, Andrew Weatherall etc. etc. If so, pls post me privately if you fancy hooking up. Chris.
