I don't really rate the Russ Gabriel that highly despite a number of attempts
to get into it. I prefer the 'Flip Down to Break' ep to this album for sure. I
think the first Yotoko single's the best thing they've done yet (although Domu
is still on a long roll in my book - the Umod album in particular). The one
thing I didn't see mentioned here is the Freeq Unique track 'Mind & Soul',
which is probably the most interesting thing I've heard in a broken stylee for
a while. There were also some good bits on Sonar Kollektiv, but I'm struggling
to think of specifics at the moment. Oh, and DKD's 'Future Rage' may have stuck
a nail in the coffin of what we think of as West London broken beat. I can't
see that specific style being done better without repeating things. Other
interesting bits last year were Spy Music's 'Cloak', which is prolly more
'fixed beat', and Afronaught Presenté Son De Batey's 'Carnaval', which is
really fast, taking off from where the Daz-I-Cue remix on the Detroit Beatdown
remixes 12" left off. I didn't rate the second of those singles quite as
highly, although good. generally the stuff I'm liking is the stuff that's
starting to resemble either house, techno or something utterly different, with
obvious bits of West London incorporated. A recent example would be the new
Bugz 'Booty La La', which people seem to either love or loathe because of the
vocals. I dig it. I give Thomas 10 seconds to disagree. ;) Oh, also worth
checking is the DJ Rels album, which is Madlib and Peanut Butter Wolf doing
brokenish stuff, sometimes even sounding a bit moody-Detroit. Very severe beats
though. Oh, and Titonton did a few nice bits this year too. 'Jam Pony' on
Amalgama was good, but not essential.

AI Records are doing a good job of resurrecting some of these sounds, like
Claro Intellecto and Jacen Solo in particular. On a slightly dancier but
probably still up your alley tip, there's been loads of stuff in the last year.
That's what I'm thinking of when I think of a resurgence of mid-90s tunes
recently. Stuff like Pasarrani, Shed, deeper Vince Watson, Atkins, Hood, Bone
and loads of other stuff I'm forgetting right now because I spent too much time
ranting above.
