Must admit this is the method I use ('cos I mess my records up when I'm
drunk and it would cost me a fortune to use alcohol to do both).
Obviously make sure the water is only very slightly warm!
However I've never paid much mind to the fact I'm using pretty hard water
and no filter - what's the issue with this?



Hard water will leave a mineral residue - it also does not break down soap very well and the two combined can leave a soapy residue. That will not only clog those grooves, but it can also make them more attractive to dust and grime.
