If someone comes to you with a cd/tape full of music that they want to
release, would you question it?
I know I wouldn't. How would you go about asking anyway? pretty awkward
situation really.
I think, as most people would, the thought that it wasn't even their music
just wouldn't really enter in your head. or it wouldn't mine anyway.
i probably wouldn't question it either, but i think you should.
if only to make sure you will never be held liable for copyright
infringement.
i assume peacefrog, when signing joe lewis, had him sign a contract in which
joe states that he owns the copyrights to the material he provides to the
label for release, and that none of the works infringe on the copyrights of
others. that way you don't have to ask him if he made the tracks himself,
but
if it turns out he didn't, it will be much easier to direct the real
copyright-
owner to the actual infringing party (here: (supposedly) joe lewis).
further,
you can probably even claim damages from joe lewis in that case, based on
breach of contract (which may enable you to release the same album with
new artwork, giving credit to: 10th planet - the exit of joe lewis...).
