got me fred wesley & the j.b.'s 'damn right i am somebody' recently and was blown away by most of the tracks (only 'blow your head' i've heard a bit too often already). i can see now where some of the rhythms of certain dance mania tracks come from. 'i'm paying taxes, what am i buying...' has some proto-techno passages imo :) and the spoken word pieces in this track are very moving. now i ask myself if this is all genuinly original stuff (was this album a milestone at the time?) or if there exist some other funk bands from that era (1974) or before that have done records in a similar vein and the same spirit (southern spirit?)?
You should check out the funk music from era 1970 Africa (Nigeria primarily) like Tony Allen and Fela and the Africa 70. Amazing and, dare I say, sometimes better than the JBs. You can get lots of this stuff on compilations so you can hear a wide variety that was being produced back then.
